World Animal Day is celebrated every year on 4 October, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. The idea was proposed by German writer Heinrich Zimmermann in 1925 and was backed in 1931 by an international congress of nature conservationists in Florence. It is a day for everyone who cares for animals: vets, shelter volunteers, dog handlers, zoologists and, of course, owners of beloved cats and dogs. Below you will find short Animal Day wishes, messages for volunteers and friends, poems and gift ideas. Wishes for other holidays of the year are in our holiday wishes calendar.

Greeting loved ones from afar
A video call — agree on a good time so the whole family can talk without rushing.
A voice message — a real voice feels warmer than text, especially for grandparents.
Flower delivery — a bouquet with a card delivered on the holiday morning makes a lovely surprise.
A family video — collect short wishes from all your relatives and send them as one clip.
Animal Day poems
A cat is purring, dogs are glad, A bird is singing in the blue. May every pet that’s lost or sad Find loving hands and a home too!

Gift ideas for Animal Day
The best gift on 4 October is help for those who need it: food or a donation for a shelter. A pet owner might love a new toy, a pet bed or a photo shoot with their animal. And a shelter volunteer or vet deserves a sunny bouquet as a thank-you. Important: choose flowers that are safe for cats, and keep bouquets out of pets' reach.
