What to know about Krzeszowice
Krzeszowice dates to 1286, when Bishop Paweł of Przemanków granted Fryczek Freton of Bytom a charter for a village headship in the existing village of Cressouicy under Magdeburg law. In 1555 it passed to Stanisław Tęczyński and the Tęczyn county, and from 1816 it belonged to the Potocki family. Its sulphur waters were known from the 17th century; the Main Spring was developed around 1778, and by 1788 the spa built up by Princess Izabela Lubomirska had baths, an infirmary and the Vauxhall pavilion. The Potockis built an Italian Renaissance palace with 228 rooms in 1850–1857, and the Kraków–Mysłowice railway arrived in 1874. Town rights came only in 1924, effective 1 January 1925.
Notable people of Krzeszowice
Natives include literary historian and critic Kazimierz Wyka (1910–1975), professor at the Jagiellonian University, and Józef Teslar (1889–1961), Polish Army major, poet and translator. Napoleonic officer Artur Stanisław Potocki (1787–1832), owner of the town from 1816, founded the Krzeszowice branch of the Potocki family.
Landmarks and local character
The town lies on the Krzeszówka River about 25 km west of central Kraków, between Tenczynek Landscape Park and the Kraków Valleys park. Highlights are the Potocki Palace and park, the neo-Gothic Church of St. Martin designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1840–1844), the Zofia spa building (1819), the Vauxhall pavilion and the Main Spring. The church grounds are a Natura 2000 site protecting Poland's second-largest colony of Geoffroy's bats.
