A short history of Lebedyn
Lebedyn is recorded from 1654; most likely the settlement was founded in 1652 by migrants from Right-Bank Ukraine. From autumn 1658 it was a company town of the Sumy Regiment, registered as the "Swan Town". From 20 November to 26 December 1708 Peter I kept his headquarters here while Menshikov tried supporters of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. The town received its coat of arms with a golden swan in 1781. Hryhorii Skovoroda and Taras Shevchenko visited Lebedyn, and Sergei Rachmaninoff spent the summer of 1893 here.
Notable people of Lebedyn
Lebedyn is the birthplace of bass singer Borys Hmyria (1903–1969), painter Fedir Krychevsky (1879), first rector of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, and Fedir Moiseienko (1754–1781), the first Ukrainian mineralogist. Poet Mykhailo Petrenko served at the local court in 1849–1862 and is buried here. The town honours its native Serhii Tabala (1995–2014), one of the "cyborgs" of Donetsk Airport, posthumously named a Hero of Ukraine.
Lebedyn today
The town spreads along both banks of the Vilshanka, 7 km before it joins the Psel, and is surrounded by pine forests. Landmarks include the wooden Resurrection Church (1769), the only survivor of five wooden churches, the Trade Rows (1868), the Intercession (1875) and St Nicholas (1914) churches, the town council building (1913–1915) and a stone cross over the grave of 900 Mazepa Cossacks.
