Mlyniv's history goes back to the early 16th century, when Grand Duke Alexander of Lithuania granted the settlement to a Muscovite named Bobr. By 1562 it was already recorded as a small town. From 1566 until 1939 it belonged to the Chodkiewicz family, who built a palace and laid out a park here. Mlyniv received Magdeburg rights in 1789 and has been an urban-type settlement since 1959; it is also listed as a historic settlement of Ukraine.
The Hebrew-language poet and translator Yitzhak Lamdan (1899–1954) was born in Mlyniv, and Lesia Ukrainka (1871–1913) stayed here in 1881.
Mlyniv stands on the Ikva, a tributary of the Styr. Its main sight is Count Chodkiewicz's palace, whose wing is a monument of national importance and now houses a museum, set in a 25-hectare landscape park. The Intercession Church dates from the 1830s–1840s. Local businesses include a furniture factory, a bakery and a dairy plant.
