What to know about Paphos
The grove and altar of Aphrodite at Paphos appear already in the Odyssey, and Old Paphos, today's Kouklia, was the foremost centre of her cult in the ancient world. Nea Paphos by the natural harbour was likely founded by Nicocles, the last king of Palaepaphos, who died in 306 BC; Augustus later restored it under the name Augusta. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Paul converted the Roman proconsul Sergius Paulus here. The ruins of ancient Paphos became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, and the city was a European Capital of Culture in 2017.

Nearby rises Petra tou Romiou, where Aphrodite is said to have emerged from the sea. Tourism in Kato Paphos, Coral Bay and Aphrodite Hills, plus bananas, grapes and tobacco, drive the economy, and the city hosts a consulate of Ukraine.
