What to know about Putyvl

Putyvl's chronicled history begins in 1146, when it appears in the Hypatian Chronicle. In the late 12th and early 13th centuries it was ruled by its own princes, a branch of the Chernihiv dynasty, and its fortress on the Seim held off a Polovtsian siege in 1186. The town is celebrated in "The Tale of Igor's Campaign": here Yaroslavna awaited news of Prince Ihor. From the mid-14th century until 1500 it belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and in 2021 Ukraine officially marked 875 years since its first mention.

Notable people of Putyvl

Natives include legal scholar Leontii Zahurskyi (1847–1912), dean of law at Kharkiv University, zoologist Pavlo Svyredenko (1897–1971) and surgeon Oleksandr Meshchaninov (1879–1969). Senior soldier Dmytro Shpak (1984–2022), posthumously named Hero of Ukraine, was also born here.

Putyvl today

Putyvl stands on the right bank of the Seim and is home to a state historical and cultural reserve of 44 heritage sites. Highlights are the Movchanskyi Monastery with its Nativity church (c. 1630–1636), the Transfiguration Cathedral (1617) with its gate church and belfry, the Church of St Nicholas the Cossack (1735–1737) and the local museum holding a baroque cabinet of Hetman Ivan Mazepa.
