Side is first mentioned in the Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax in the mid-4th century BC; Strabo and Arrian say it was founded by Greek settlers from Cyme in Aeolis, most likely in the 7th century BC. Alexander the Great took it without a fight in 333 BC, and between 188 and 36 BC the city minted its own tetradrachms.
