Spała: from a mill to a presidential retreat
Spała's history goes back to the early 17th century, and a 1789 survey of royal estates records a milling settlement here with a mill and a fulling mill. The name comes from the Spała family of millers. Tsarevich Alexander hunted in the local forests in 1876, and in 1884 a wooden hunting palace was built for the imperial family. In 1922 Spała became the summer residence of Polish presidents, and on 28 August 1927, under President Ignacy Mościcki, it hosted the first national harvest festival, a tradition revived in 2000.
Spała today
This resort village lies in the Pilica Forest on the Pilica River and gives its name to Spała Landscape Park. Its symbol is a bison statue cast in 1860 and brought here in 1928. Other sights include the wooden Zakopane-style chapel of Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown (1922–1923), the 19th-century palace park, the 1890 water tower and the 1936 bridge over the Pilica. Spała is home to the Olympic Preparation Centre, and antique and folk craft fairs run here on alternate Sundays from May to October. We will deliver your flowers to the specified address in Spała.
