Strzegom: a thousand years of history
Strzegom first appears in writing as «gradice Ztrigom» in the 1155 Wrocław bull of Pope Adrian IV. An early medieval stronghold of the Ślężanie tribe later became a castellan's seat, and in 1149 Bishop Walter of Wrocław consecrated its first church. In 1242 Duchess Anna, widow of Henry the Pious, probably granted it town rights under German law. Duke Bolko I built its defensive walls in 1291–1299, and in 1345 King Casimir III the Great allowed merchants of the Duchy of Świdnica, which included Strzegom, to trade with Rus'. On 4 June 1745 Frederick II of Prussia defeated the Austrians nearby at the Battle of Hohenfriedberg (Dobromierz).
Notable people of Strzegom
Natives include German poet Johann Christian Günther (1695–1723), Lutheran church leader Hermann Voss (1872–1938), historian and former University of Opole rector Stanisław Nicieja (born 1948), historian Krzysztof Szwagrzyk (born 1964) and volleyball player Andrzej Stelmach (born 1972), who played 306 matches for Poland and competed at the 1996 and 2004 Olympics.
Strzegom today
The town lies on the Strzegomka River in the Sudeten Foothills. Its skyline is dominated by the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (1480–1522); other sights are the Church of St Barbara in a former synagogue, the Church of St Hedwig, the Chapel of St Anthony (1520), the town walls with the Bird Gate and the 1909 Grabina railway station. Strzegom granite clads the Westerplatte Monument in Gdańsk and the Peace Palace in The Hague. The town also hosts the Strzegom Horse Trials and an international folklore festival every August.
