Velykyi Bychkiv, from a royal gift to wood chemistry

Velykyi Bychkiv's written history begins in 1373, when King Louis the Great granted Bychkiv as a gift. In 1720 the largest sawmill in Transcarpathia was built here on the Shopurka, and in 1868 the Klotild plant opened as the first wood-chemical enterprise in Hungary. Until 1944 the place was officially called Velykyi Bochkov; it became an urban-type settlement in 1947 and a settlement in 2024.

Natives include Theodore Romzha (1911–1947), Greek Catholic Bishop of Mukachevo and a beatified martyr, footballer Ivan Yaremchuk (b. 1962) of Dynamo Kyiv, and Hungarian biologist János Balogh (b. 1903).

Landmarks and local character

The settlement lies where the Shopurka flows into the Tysa, in the Hutsul region, and is a historic centre of wood-chemical and woodworking industry. Landmarks include the Greek Catholic Dormition Church (1845), the Church of the Protection (1895), the wooden St Nicholas Church (2005) and a monument to the Carpathian Sich fighters.
