Zdolbuniv has been known since 1497, when Grand Duke Alexander of Lithuania granted the village of Dolbuniv to Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi; the modern name has been used since 1629. The railway changed everything: in 1873 the Kyiv — Brest line came through, bringing a station and a locomotive depot. In 1884 Edmond Jelinek's cement works was built here — today's Volyn-Cement, the oldest cement plant in Ukraine. Zdolbuniv became a town in 1903 and a county seat in 1925. For its 500th anniversary in 1997 it adopted a coat of arms with a pick, a hammer and a railway wrench.
Local pride includes Vladimír Syrovátka (1908–1973), born here, who won Olympic gold for Czechoslovakia in the C-2 1000 m canoe event in 1936. Belarusian writer and poet Kandrat Leika (1860–1921), a founder of Belarusian children's drama, lived in Zdolbuniv from 1918 to 1921 and is buried here. Architect Leonid Maslov (1909–1943), a researcher of Western Volhynian architecture, worked here in 1941–1943.
Zdolbuniv is one of the key railway junctions of Western Ukraine and almost merges with southern Rivne. Worth seeing are St Catherine's Church (construction began in 1910), the Dormition Cathedral, the Catholic Church of Sts Peter and Paul, the local history museum opened in 2011 in a historic building, and the former Czech school of 1917, now Zdolbuniv Gymnasium. Lake Visimka and the Staromylsk pond are favourite leisure spots. We deliver bouquets to any address in Zdolbuniv — home, office or a festive table.
