What to know about Aleksandrów Kujawski

Aleksandrów Kujawski began in 1834 as the Aleksandrowo manor farm, carved out of the Osno estate in the Russian partition of Poland and named after its owner, nobleman Aleksander Sumiński. Growth came with the Warsaw–Bydgoszcz railway: a border station and customs house opened here in December 1862, and during the January Uprising of 1863 local railwaymen and customs officers helped smuggle people and weapons. On 4 September 1879 Emperor Alexander II received German Emperor Wilhelm I in the station apartments. The town gained full municipal rights by a decree of Józef Piłsudski on 4 February 1919. In 1920–1921 it hosted an internment camp for soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic Army.

Notable people of Aleksandrów Kujawski

Natives include neurologist Jan Piltz (1870–1930), founder of the Kraków school of neurology, writer and critic Maria Danilewicz-Zielińska (1907–2003), architect Bolesław Tatarkiewicz (1910–1992), film director Grzegorz Królikiewicz (1939–2017) and Władysław Cieplak (1917–1944), a Warsaw Uprising company commander decorated with the Virtuti Militari. Poet Edward Stachura (1937–1979) is also linked to the town, which holds the «Stachuriada» festival.

The town sits on the edge of the Inowrocław Plain within the Bydgoszcz–Toruń agglomeration, where a branch line leaves for the spa town of Ciechocinek. Its landmarks are the 19th-century railway station with an 1895 water tower, the neo-Gothic Church of the Transfiguration (1882–1886), the Trojanowski palace and park, and the Chapel of St Alexander Nevsky in a former Orthodox rectory (1893).
