Chemnitz: from its first mention to today

The name Chemnitz comes from the Slavic word for "stone", the same root as in Kamianske and Kamianets-Podilskyi; the river "Caminizi" is recorded as early as 1012–1018. The town itself is first mentioned in 1143, when King Conrad III confirmed a Benedictine monastery's market right, and around 1170 Emperor Frederick I made it a free imperial city. A bleaching privilege in 1357 turned Chemnitz into a weaving centre, and in the 19th century it became the industrial "Saxon Manchester"; Auto Union, the forerunner of Audi, was founded here in 1932. From 1953 to 1990 the city was called Karl-Marx-Stadt, and in 2025 it was a European Capital of Culture.

Notable people of Chemnitz

Geologist Georgius Agricola (1494–1555), author of De re metallica, was town physician from 1533 and was elected mayor in 1546. Entrepreneur Richard Hartmann (1809–1878), the "Saxon locomotive king", helped build the city's industry. Expressionist painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884–1976) was born in Rottluff, now part of the city, and writer Stefan Heym (1913–2001) was a native and honorary citizen. Olympic figure-skating champion Katarina Witt (born 1965) trained here.

Chemnitz today

The city stands on the Chemnitz River, formed where the Zwönitz and Würschnitz meet in Altchemnitz, at the northern foot of the Ore Mountains. Landmarks include the Red Tower of the late 12th or early 13th century, the Old Town Hall with its Renaissance portal, the Petrified Forest at the Kulturkaufhaus Tietz, Rabenstein Castle, the smallest in Saxony, and Henry van de Velde's Villa Esche (1902).
