Dubrovytsia, the oldest town in Rivne Oblast

Dubrovytsia is first recorded in 1005, in a list of towns of the Turiv eparchy. The Hypatian Chronicle tells that in 1184 Prince Hlib Yuriiovych of Dubrovytsia joined Sviatoslav Vsevolodovych's campaign against the Polovtsians; from the late 12th century the town was the capital of a small appanage principality. Around 1400 it passed to the Holshansky princes, one branch of whom became known as the Holshansky-Dubrovytsky, and in 1571 Prince Andrei Kurbsky briefly held the town as the dowry of Princess Maria Holshanska. A Piarist college opened here in 1695, town rights with a coat of arms followed in 1796, and the current town status dates from 1940.

Famous natives

Dubrovytsia is the birthplace of physicist Georges Charpak (1924–2010), winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics, as well as People's Artist of Ukraine Tetiana Kaspruk (born 1959) and poet and ethnographer Lidiia Shevelo (1927–2017).

Landmarks and local character

The town lies on the Horyn River in Volhynian Polissia and is the smallest town in Rivne Oblast by area. Two national-level monuments stand here: the Church of St John the Baptist (1695–1742) and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1861); there is also the wooden St Nicholas Church (1872) and an Old Rus hillfort of the 11th–13th centuries. The Dubrovytsia History and Ethnography Museum tells the local story, and monuments honour Princesses Anastasiia and Yuliiania Holshanska.
