Ostroh: from the first record to today

Ostroh is first recorded in 1100, when the town was handed to Prince Davyd Ihorovych. From the 14th to the 17th century it was the family seat of the Ostrozky princes. In 1576 Prince Kostiantyn-Vasyl Ostrozky founded the Ostroh Academy here, the first institution of higher learning in present-day Ukraine, and in 1585 the town received Magdeburg rights.

Names linked to Ostroh

Locals are proud that the printer Ivan Fedorov produced the Ostroh Bible of 1581 here, with the support of Prince Kostiantyn-Vasyl Ostrozky. The academy's first rector was the polemical writer Herasym Smotrytskyi.

Sights of Ostroh

Ostroh lies where the Viliia flows into the Horyn and is one of Volhynia's oldest historic centres. The Ostrozky Princes' Castle with its 14th-century Stone Tower and 16th-century New (Round) Tower is the main sight, together with the Epiphany Cathedral, the Church of the Assumption, the Tatar and Lutsk gate towers and the Trinity Church of the Mezhyrich Monastery. Today it is a university town, home to the National University of Ostroh Academy. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Ostroh.
