Around 845 Saint Altfrid founded an abbey for women in what is now central Essen, and the town's first documented mention dates from 898. In 971 Abbess Mathilde II, granddaughter of Emperor Otto I, endowed the treasury with the Golden Madonna, the oldest known sculpture of the Virgin Mary in the Western world. Essen has been called a city since 1003, received its town charter in 1244 and became a free imperial city under Emperor Charles IV in 1377. In 1811 Friedrich Krupp founded Germany's first cast-steel factory here. In 2010 Essen was European Capital of Culture on behalf of the Ruhr, and in 2017 European Green Capital.
Friedrich Krupp (1787–1826) founded the family steel business, and industrialist Alfred Krupp (1812–1887) built Villa Hügel in 1873. Essen is the birthplace of publisher Karl Baedeker (1801–1859), actor Heinz Rühmann (1902–1994) and footballer Helmut Rahn (1929–2003), who scored the winning goal in the 1954 World Cup final.
The Ruhr flows through the south of the city, forming Lake Baldeney, and the Emscher through the north. Essen's signature site is the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Also worth seeing are Essen Cathedral and its treasury, 269-room Villa Hügel, the Aalto Theatre, Museum Folkwang and the 70-hectare Grugapark with its botanical garden. Home to E.ON and RWE, Essen is often called Germany's energy capital, and since 2022 it has had a cooperation agreement with Rivne in Ukraine.
