Games are the heart of any children’s party: while the kids are busy, the adults relax and the birthday child is happy. Here are 24 tried-and-tested games for birthdays, New Year or school parties: active and calm, indoor and outdoor, for little ones aged 3–5 and for 10–12-year-olds. No complicated props — everything you need is already at home.

Active indoor games

1. Musical statues. Kids dance while the music plays and freeze when it stops. Anyone who moves helps the host spot the next wobbler. 2. Keep it up. Children tap balloons to keep them off the floor, adding one more every minute.

3. Balloon carry. Pairs carry a balloon to the finish line squeezed between their backs or foreheads. 4. Sleeping bear. The “bear” sits with eyes closed while children sneak up; when the bear wakes and growls, everyone runs back to base.

5. Dance mirror. The leader shows moves, the kids copy, then take turns leading. 6. Touch the colour. The host calls out a colour and children have ten seconds to touch something that colour. The last one gets a silly task.

Calm table games

7. Mystery bag. Put objects in an opaque bag and let children guess them by touch. 8. Charades. Act out an animal, object or cartoon character without words. Use picture cards for little ones.

9. Blindfold drawing. The host names something to draw — a house, a cat, the birthday child — and kids draw with their eyes closed. Plenty of laughs. 10. What has changed? Place 6–8 objects on the table; while the kids look away, remove or swap one.

11. Name that tune. Five-second snippets of cartoon songs. 12. Wishes for the birthday child. Each guest draws a card or writes one wish, and the birthday child keeps them all in an envelope.

Outdoor games

13. Treasure hunt. Hide the “treasure” (sweets, stickers) and lay out 5–7 riddle clues, each leading to the next. 14. Bubble contest. Who can blow the biggest bubble or keep one from popping the longest?

15. Egg-and-spoon race. Carry a tennis ball or a potato on a spoon to the finish and back. 16. Hot potato. Children pass a ball quickly around a circle while music plays; whoever holds it when the music stops does a funny task.

17. Hopscotch and skipping. Good old games kids still love. 18. Chalk gallery. Everyone draws a masterpiece on the pavement and parents pick winners in categories like “brightest” and “funniest”.

Games for 10–12-year-olds

19. Mafia or Werewolf. A team game of logic and acting. 20. Quiz. Questions about cartoons, games, animals and the birthday child, in teams of three or four.

21. Detective. Someone has “stolen” the cake — kids search for clues and work out the culprit. 22. Video challenge. Teams have ten minutes to invent and film a dance or a sketch.

23. Who am I? A sticky note with a character’s name goes on each forehead, and players ask yes-or-no questions to guess who they are. 24. Secret box. Everyone writes a fun fact about themselves and the others guess who wrote it. For a full party plan, see kids’ birthday party at home.

Rules for happy party games

  • Alternate active and calm games
  • Explain the rules in 30 seconds — kids won’t listen longer
  • Reward everyone with a small prize
  • Never force shy kids — let them help the host
  • The birthday child needn’t win everything, but should be the star
  • Clear fragile things from the room before active games

Prizes and gifts for a kids’ party

Small prizes — stickers, chalk, bubbles, mini toys — make every game feel special. The birthday child will love balloons and a soft toy waiting for them in the morning before the guests arrive.

Ask a parent or an older child to host, prepare the game list and props in advance and put on a cheerful playlist.
