Roses in a box have become one of the most popular gift formats in recent years. The arrangement keeps its shape, needs no vase, is easy to carry and give, and looks stylish and luxurious. Here is how boxed roses work, what types and sizes exist, how many roses to choose, how to care for the arrangement so it lasts longer and who it suits best.
The number of roses depends on box diameter and bud size.
How boxed roses work
Inside the box sits floral foam, a porous material that soaks up and holds water. The florist soaks the foam, cuts the roses short and pushes the stems in tightly to form an even dome. The foam feeds the flowers, so no vase is needed and the shape holds even in transit.
Round hatboxes are most common, along with square boxes, heart shapes, book-style boxes and boxes with a compartment for sweets or jewellery. The box colour is matched to the flowers: black or burgundy sets off red roses, white or blush suits soft shades.
Which roses to choose for a box
The classic is red roses in a black box: passionate and elegant. Soft pink, blush and white roses suit a mum, a friend or wedding gifts. Peony roses and spray roses look especially lovely in a box, creating a lush, garden-style arrangement.
Eucalyptus, gypsophila, macarons, chocolates, a card or jewellery in a separate compartment are often added, turning the arrangement into a complete gift that needs no extra wrapping.
How to care for boxed roses
The key is to keep the foam from drying out. Every one or two days slowly pour room-temperature water under the flowers around the edge of the box: 100–200 ml for a small arrangement, 300–500 ml for a large one. Water should not pool at the bottom. Keep the box somewhere cool, away from radiators and direct sun.
With proper care, boxed roses last 5–10 days. When the first blooms start to fade, remove them carefully and move the rest to a vase after recutting the stems to gain a few more days. More tips in our rose guide.
Who to give boxed roses to
Boxed roses suit almost any occasion: a partner's birthday or anniversary, your mum, a friend, a colleague, a female boss, a wedding or a new baby. They are especially handy for office delivery or when you don't know whether the recipient has a vase. Restrained dark arrangements suit men too.
