This article was prepared with the support of UFL flower delivery. A white dress, plenty of flowers, a cake and, of course, the couple's first dance. It can be tender and romantic, or it can bring the house down and go viral on social media. Watch our selection of the most fun wedding dances for inspiration, and read on for tips on preparing your own.

Romance or energy?

You don't have to choose. Many couples start with a slow waltz or tango, and then the music suddenly switches to an upbeat mix — guests always love this trick. A classic first dance lasts 2–3 minutes: long enough to impress, short enough that nobody gets bored or tired.

Should you rehearse?

Yes, even if you want to "dance from the heart". A few lessons with a choreographer help you learn the basic moves, feel more relaxed and see how the dance looks from the outside. Comic and choreographed numbers need especially careful rehearsal — humour only works when the moves are in sync.

Dancing is not only for the couple

  • Plan a dance with your parents — a touching moment the whole family will remember.
  • Prepare a flash mob with friends and the bridal party; you can rehearse it at the hen or stag party.
  • Invite a host or choreographer to run a short dance class for guests right at the party.
  • Build a playlist with music for every generation.

A funny dance: yes or no?

Of course, if it suits you as a couple. A comic number with unexpected moves, costume changes or a mash-up of popular songs will be remembered by everyone. You can also prepare two dances — a romantic first one and a playful one later in the evening, for example together with friends. The main thing is that you enjoy it yourselves: guests always pick up on the couple's mood.

Outfit, shoes and bouquet

  • Rehearse in the shoes you will dance in and in a dress of similar length. If the dress is full or has a train, work out how to bustle it, or prepare a second outfit for the party.
  • Before the dance, hand the bridal bouquet to a bridesmaid or the planner, and pin the groom's buttonhole more securely — energetic moves can knock it off.
  • If you plan to toss the bouquet, order a separate "toss bouquet" so you can keep the main one as a memento.

FAQ

How long is the first dance?

Usually 2–3 minutes. If the song is longer, it is shortened or turned into a music mix.

How far in advance should we start learning the dance?

Ideally 2–3 months before: 8–12 lessons are enough even for beginners.
