Yurii’s (George’s) name day under the new church calendar of the OCU and UGCC is celebrated on 23 April; under the old style it is 6 May. It is the feast of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious — the soldier who slew the dragon, patron of defenders and farmers. In Ukraine it is known as St George’s Day (Yuriiv Den). Saint George was a Roman soldier who died for his faith in the early 4th century. He is depicted on horseback slaying a dragon — a symbol of good triumphing over evil. In Ukraine, St George’s Day was an important spring feast for farmers: people washed in the morning dew, walked around the fields and drove cattle to pasture for the first time.
Yurii is an old Slavic form of the Greek name George, meaning “farmer”, “one who works the land”. In folk tradition St George the Dragon-Slayer protects fields and livestock, and his spring feast was seen as the start of true spring. Wishes for Yurii:
