Novhorod-Siverskyi: a town with a chronicle history

Novhorod-Siverskyi is first mentioned in Volodymyr Monomakh's Instruction to his children, in connection with events of 1078–1079. After the Council of Liubech in 1097 it became the capital of Oleh Sviatoslavych's principality, and its prince Ihor Sviatoslavych (1151–1202) led the 1185 campaign against the Cumans immortalised in The Tale of Igor's Campaign. In 1620 it became the first town in the Chernihiv region to receive Magdeburg rights, granted by King Sigismund III. In 1675 Lazar Baranovych opened the first printing house of Left-bank Ukraine at the Transfiguration Monastery. The town was liberated from Russian occupation in early April 2022.

Notable people of Novhorod-Siverskyi

Businessman Zino Davidoff (1906–1994), founder of the Davidoff brand, was born here. The local gymnasium, opened in 1804, educated educator Konstantin Ushinsky (1823–1871), historian Mykhailo Maksymovych (1804–1873), first rector of Kyiv University, and writer Panteleimon Kulish (1819–1897).

Landmarks and local highlights

The town sits high above the Desna River and is one of Ukraine's northernmost towns. Its centrepiece is the Transfiguration Monastery with a cathedral (1791–1796) designed by Giacomo Quarenghi; nearby stand the Dormition Cathedral (late 17th century), the wooden St Nicholas Church (1760), the Triumphal Arch (1786–1787) and a monument to Prince Ihor, all part of the Tale of Igor's Campaign museum reserve.
