Pereiaslav: a chronicle town

Pereiaslav is first recorded in Prince Oleh's treaty with Byzantium of 907, which names it the third town of Rus. The Primary Chronicle links its name to an event of 992, when a young tanner defeated a Pecheneg champion and "took over the glory". In the late 1080s Bishop Yefrem built St Michael's Cathedral, one of the grandest churches of Rus, and the town served as capital of the Principality of Pereiaslav. On 6 March 1585 King Stefan Batory granted Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi a charter to revive the town, which received Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms. On 8 January 1654 the Pereiaslav Council met on the central square. From 1943 to 2019 the town was called Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi; its historic name was restored on 30 October 2019.

People linked with Pereiaslav

Sholem Aleichem (1859–1916), a founder of modern Yiddish literature, was born here. Architect Volodymyr Zabolotnyi (1898–1962), founder of the Academy of Architecture of Ukraine and co-author of the Verkhovna Rada building, was born in Karan, now part of the town. Historian Mykhailo Sikorskyi (1923–2011), Hero of Ukraine, lived and worked here and created the Pereiaslav reserve.

Pereiaslav today

The town lies on the Trubizh River, crossed also by the Alta, and borders the Kaniv Reservoir. The Pereiaslav National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve unites 25 museums, including the Open-Air Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of the Middle Dnipro Region, the Skovoroda Memorial Museum and the Shevchenko "Testament" Museum. Also worth seeing are the Ascension Monastery with its cathedral of 1695–1700, funded by Ivan Mazepa, and the Church of Sts Borys and Hlib (1839–1840). The town is home to the Hryhorii Skovoroda University. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Pereiaslav — home, office or a festive table.

Central Kyiv is about 78 km away.
