Storozhynets: a bit of history

Storozhynets first appears in a 1448 charter of Moldavian ruler Roman II as a watch post on the Siret River; its first inhabitants were loggers. In 1476 it was recorded as the property of Moldavian nobleman Todorakhi Sorochanu. After 1774 the area became part of Austria, with schools teaching in German, Romanian and Ukrainian. Storozhynets gained town status in 1854, when brick and sawmill works and the Hlyboka–Storozhynets–Berehomet railway appeared. Andrey Sheptytsky celebrated a service in the local Greek Catholic church in 1900, and on 21 May 1904 Storozhynets became a district town.

Notable people of Storozhynets

The town is the birthplace of musician Marian Hadenko, People's Artist of Ukraine since 1999, Romanian composer, pianist and conductor Radu Paladi (1927–2013), and statesman and diplomat Valerii Tsybukh.

Storozhynets today

Set at the foot of the Carpathians on the Siret, about 23 km from Chernivtsi, Storozhynets is known as a garden town with over 40 m² of greenery per resident. Its pride is an 18-hectare arboretum at the forestry college with up to 1,200 species of trees and shrubs.
