Zagreb: A Little History

The Roman town of Andautonia stood near present-day Zagreb from the 1st to the 5th century. Zagreb itself traces its history to 1094, when Hungarian King Ladislaus founded a diocese and the church settlement of Kaptol grew around the cathedral; the name first appears in a charter of 1134. In 1242 King Béla IV granted neighbouring Gradec the Golden Bull, making it a free royal city. Zagreb became the Croatian capital in 1557, and in 1669 the Jesuits founded the academy that preceded the University of Zagreb.

Notable People of Zagreb

Ban Josip Jelačić (1801–1859) united Gradec and Kaptol, and the main square bears his name. Engineer and inventor Slavoljub Eduard Penkala (1871–1922), a citizen of Zagreb, created the inventions from which the ball-point pen developed.

Zagreb lies on the Sava River at the foot of Medvednica, and its Upper Town is one of the best-preserved historic cores in Croatia.
