Which flowers to give on 8 March

Vase life is approximate, with daily water changes and trimmed stems.

The most popular 8 March flowers are tulips: affordable, bright and unmistakably spring. A classic choice is 15–25 tulips in one colour or a mix of pastels. For mum, choose roses, alstroemeria or a flower box; for colleagues, compact tulip and mimosa bouquets; for your partner, garden roses or a designer bouquet.

Tip: order your 8 March bouquet 3–5 days ahead. Demand for tulips and roses is several times higher than usual on the eve of the holiday, and couriers are at full capacity on the morning of 8 March.

A little history

International Women’s Day grew out of the early-20th-century movement for women’s equal rights. In 1910, at the International Conference of Socialist Women in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin proposed an annual women’s day, and in 1975 the United Nations officially recognised 8 March as International Women’s Day. Today countries mark it differently: in some it is a day of campaigning for equality, in others an occasion to thank mothers, sisters, friends and colleagues with spring flowers.

Which flowers last longest?

Alstroemeria, chrysanthemums and carnations — up to 2–3 weeks. Tulips and mimosa last about a week.

Usually an odd number — 7, 15, 25, 51 or 101, depending on the occasion and budget.
