Two bouquets of similar size can differ in price by a factor of two. It is not just the shop’s appetite: the cost of flowers depends on the variety, season, origin and the florist’s work. Once you understand these factors, it is easy to choose a beautiful bouquet within your budget.

1. Number and size

The most obvious factor: more flowers means a higher price. But the cost rises not only with the number but also with stem length and bud size. A 40 cm rose and an 80 cm rose of the same variety differ considerably in price. As for how many flowers you really need, see our cheat sheet.

2. Flower variety

Standard roses, chrysanthemums, alstroemerias and tulips in season are more affordable. Peonies, garden roses, hydrangeas, orchids and ranunculus cost more: they are harder to grow and transport.

3. Origin: local or imported

A large share of roses come from Kenya, Ecuador and the Netherlands. Imported flowers travel thousands of kilometres in refrigerated holds, so logistics, exchange rates and duties affect the price. Ukrainian greenhouse flowers are often cheaper and fresher, but the choice of varieties is narrower.

4. Seasons and holidays

Peonies are cheaper in May and June, tulips in spring. Before Valentine’s Day, 8 March and Mother’s Day, rose prices rise because of a worldwide rush in demand. Tip: order in advance — there is a separate article about this.

5. The florist’s work

A mixed bouquet is a piece of design: choosing colours, textures, greenery and shape. Complex signature arrangements take time and experience. A single-variety bouquet of 25 roses is easier to make than an elegant mixed bouquet of 10 different flowers.

6. Wrapping and presentation

Kraft paper and film are the most affordable. Designer paper, boxes, baskets, vases and floral foam add to the price. Compare the formats in the article bouquet, box or basket.

7. Delivery and freshness

The price includes delivery, cold storage and a freshness guarantee. A bouquet that is too cheap often means old stock that will wilt in a day or two. We explain how to check freshness here.

How to get a beautiful bouquet without overpaying

  • Choose seasonal flowers.
  • Pick spray roses instead of single-headed ones: they give volume with fewer stems.
  • Add greenery and gypsophila to make the bouquet fuller without much expense.
  • Order ahead of holidays.
  • Trust your florist: tell them your budget and the occasion, and they will make the best of what is available.

In short. A bouquet’s price is shaped by variety, quantity, season, origin, the florist’s work and presentation. Be honest about your budget, and you’ll find a beautiful bouquet for any amount.
