A crown of fresh flowers is one of the most romantic bridal accessories. It gives the bride a light, natural look, pairs beautifully with boho and rustic dresses, and echoes ancient traditions — from classical wreaths to the Ukrainian vinok. We used to cover flower crowns in separate articles; now everything is in one guide: the types of crowns, which flowers last all day, how to match a crown to your look, how to keep it fresh and how to make one yourself.
Wreaths of flowers and leaves were worn in ancient Greece and Rome: victors received laurel wreaths, and brides adorned their hair with flowers and herbs. In Germany and elsewhere in Europe, the myrtle bridal wreath was popular for centuries. In Ukrainian tradition the vinok is an important symbol of maidenhood and beauty: it was woven from periwinkle, viburnum, poppies, cornflowers and ears of wheat, decorated with ribbons, and on Kupala Night wreaths were floated on the water. For more on folk customs, see traditional Ukrainian weddings.
A crown spends the whole day without water, so it needs sturdy flowers and foliage: spray roses, mini chrysanthemums, gypsophila, waxflower, statice, craspedia, eucalyptus, ruscus, rosemary and lavender. Peonies, anemones, sweet peas and hydrangeas look delicate but wilt or shed quickly — use them in the bouquet and choose similar-looking but tougher flowers for the crown.
With the right flowers and cool storage, 8–12 hours — a whole wedding day.
