Dmytro’s (Dmitry’s) name day under the new church calendar of the OCU and UGCC is celebrated on 26 October; under the old style it is 8 November. The day honours the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki — a soldier who did not renounce his faith and the patron of defenders. Below are short name day wishes for Dmytro, wishes in your own words, messages for a husband, dad, son, friend or colleague, and poems. Name days of other people are in our main collection of name day wishes.
Other men’s name days: Mykhailo’s name day and Peter and Paul name day; Saint Demetrius is honoured as the patron of soldiers — see also Armed Forces Day wishes.
Saint Demetrius was a soldier and defender, so wishing strength, courage and peace fits well. Add a personal detail. For example: “Dima, happy name day! You are always ready to stand up for your people — thank you for being there. May Saint Demetrius protect you, and may your life be full of peace, warmth and people you can rely on.”
Happy name day, Dmytro dear!
May strength and courage persevere,
May life be bright in every way
And angels guard you every day!
Saint Demetrius, warrior of light,
Keep you safe by day and night,
May your path be straight and true
And all good things come to you!
Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki lived in the Greek city of Thessaloniki and served as a Roman military commander. He was executed for his faith in Christ in the early 4th century. In Ukraine he has long been honoured as the patron of soldiers, and on the Saturday before his feast people remember the departed — Demetrius Memorial Saturday.
Dmytro comes from the Greek Demetrios, “devoted to Demeter”, goddess of agriculture and fertility, hence “fruitful”, “linked to the earth”. Famous namesakes include historian Dmytro Yavornytsky, who devoted his life to studying the Zaporozhian Cossacks. Wishes for Dmytro:
