A first birthday is as much a celebration for the parents as for the baby: a year of sleepless nights, first steps and first words is behind you. Your child will not remember the party, but the photos, videos and family memories will last. Here is how to celebrate a first birthday without tiring the baby out: when and where to hold it, who to invite, what to serve, first-birthday traditions and how to set up a photo corner.

Around the baby’s routine. Plan the party so your child is well rested — usually after the afternoon nap, say from 3 to 6 pm. One and a half to two hours of activity is plenty for a one-year-old; after that, tears are normal.
At home is the most comfortable: familiar toys, the cot nearby and a nap whenever needed. A café with a play area works for a bigger guest list, but a new place and noise can be stressful for a baby.
Guests. The closest people: grandparents, godparents, a few family friends and perhaps babies of the same age with their parents. Six to twelve people is ideal. Ask guests to stay home if they have a cold.
First haircut. Ukraine has an old tradition of a first-haircut ritual: the godparents symbolically trimmed a lock of the child’s hair, which was kept as a memento. Many parents now do this at home during the party and keep the lock in an envelope or keepsake box.
Choosing objects. A few items are laid out in front of the baby — a book, a wallet, keys, a paintbrush, a microphone — and whatever they grab first is said to predict their future. It is just a game, but guests love it. Smash cake. A small cake the baby can dig into with their hands — funny photos guaranteed.
Another lovely tradition is a time capsule: guests write letters to the child to open at 18. Parents can also take a photo with the same soft toy every year to see how their child grows.

For the baby, serve familiar food they already eat: vegetables, fruit, porridge and soft pancakes. Bake the smash cake with little sugar and cream — a banana sponge with yoghurt or curd-cheese frosting. For adults, a regular buffet and a cake with a number 1.
Safety. Keep nuts, whole grapes, popcorn and hard sweets out of reach — they are choking hazards. Pick up pieces of burst latex balloons straight away and tie balloon ribbons higher than a baby can reach. Light the candle only for a quick photo and keep it away from the baby.
The classics are a number 1 foil balloon, a balloon garland in the party colours and a banner with the baby’s name. A “12 months” photo line is especially touching: one photo from each month of the first year pegged on a string.
Choose table flowers without a strong scent or pollen — hydrangeas, roses, lisianthus — and place them out of the baby’s reach. For a mum who has not slept through the night for a year, a bouquet on this day is a particularly lovely gift. A baby’s first year is also mum’s first year in a new role. A bouquet for her on this day is a way of saying “you did it”. For the baby, a soft toy with no small parts or a board book is a good choice.

After the afternoon nap, for 1.5–2 hours, with your closest people. Balloons and a photo line, familiar food for the baby, a smash cake and a couple of traditions like the first haircut.
Grandparents, godparents and a few family friends — 6–12 people in total. Babies of the same age are optional.
Photos and video, a first haircut, choosing objects, a smash cake and a time capsule of letters from guests. No games needed — attention and toys are plenty.
