You can celebrate a birthday loudly with friends, quietly as a couple or even on your own — what matters is that the day feels the way you or the birthday person want it to. Where to start

Ask yourself what you want. A loud party, a quiet dinner, an adventure or a rest? If the celebration is for someone else, gently ask their close friends: not everyone likes surprises or being the centre of attention.

Set a budget and a guest count. They decide the format: for 5–8 people a home party or a small restaurant works well, while 20 or more call for a rented room, a terrace or a country house.

Choose the date. You don’t have to celebrate on the exact day: the weekend before or after is often easier for guests. If your birthday falls during the holidays, tell friends well in advance.

Think about a theme. A theme is optional, but it makes it easier to choose decor, dress code and entertainment: the 90s, Gatsby, a pyjama party, a Provence-style picnic or a board-game night. If you choose a theme, add a dress code to the invitation so guests can prepare. For ready-made wording to send your guests, see birthday invitation wording. For more party planning guides, see how to plan a party.

A birthday party at home: food, decor and fun

Food. For 6–10 guests a buffet is easiest: bruschetta, a cheese board, mini tartlets, salad in individual cups and a hot dish you can make ahead (lasagne, roast meat or pilaf). Allow 300–400 g of food per guest for an evening-long party.

Decor. Three touches are enough: balloons (a garland or age numbers), flowers on the table and good lighting — fairy lights, candles, warm lamps. Keep the table bouquet low so guests can see each other.

Entertainment. A 3–4-hour playlist, 2–3 games (a quiz about the birthday person, charades, Mafia) and a moment for toasts and wishes. Ask a friend to host so the birthday person can relax too.

Guests often bring flowers, balloons and sweets themselves. If you want to surprise the birthday person from the whole group, see what to give with flowers.

Birthday party checklist

  • Format, budget and guest list
  • Venue booked or home ready
  • Invitations sent two weeks ahead
  • Cake and candles
  • Food and drinks with some to spare
  • Balloons, flowers and lighting
  • Playlist and 2–3 games
  • A host or a friend keeping things on track
  • A charged phone or camera for photos
  • Taxis for guests at the end of the night

Flowers for the birthday person

A bouquet is the simplest way to send your wishes, even if you can’t make it to the party. Roses, peonies or hydrangeas are popular for women, while a restrained arrangement in a box or a basket suits men.

FAQ

How can you celebrate a birthday on a budget?

Celebrate at home or outdoors, ask each guest to bring a dish and choose free fun: a picnic, board games or a movie night. You can bake the cake yourself.

How do you celebrate if you don’t want to see anyone?

That is completely fine. Spend the day the way you like: sleep in, go to the cinema, order your favourite food or buy yourself flowers. A celebration does not have to be loud.

How many guests should you invite?

As many as you are comfortable talking to in one evening. For a home party, 6–10 people is usually enough.

When should you send invitations?

Two to three weeks ahead, or a month ahead for a weekend or out-of-town party. Remind guests of the time and address a day or two before.
