Developers have their own habits: long hours at the screen, coffee, headphones and favourite gadgets. A one-size-fits-all present won't land, but something that makes their workspace more comfortable will be appreciated instantly. Here are gift ideas for a programmer's birthday or Programmer's Day: gadgets, health items, funny gifts, experiences, flowers and what to avoid.
Don't guess at hardware if you don't know the field: developers are picky about keyboards, headphones and monitors. Ask what's on their wish list or give a tech store voucher. Pay attention to what they do outside work: many developers love games, board games, sport or travel.
For the desk: a mechanical keyboard, a vertical mouse, a large desk mat, a laptop stand, a docking station, noise-cancelling headphones, a monitor light bar. For health: an ergonomic chair or back cushion, a neck massager, blue-light glasses, a smart bottle that reminds them to drink water.
Just for fun: a mug with a code snippet, a rubber duck for rubber duck debugging, a T-shirt with a dev meme, binary socks. For growth: an online course subscription, a book on architecture or algorithms, an IT conference ticket. Experiences: an escape room, go-karting, a VR club, a coffee tasting.
Flowers for developers
For a female developer's birthday, roses or a boxed arrangement work well: it fits on a desk with no vase needed. For a male programmer, try a men's chilli pepper bouquet or a sweet basket instead of classic flowers: it's funny and memorable. Programmer's Day falls on the 256th day of the year: 13 September, or 12 September in a leap year.
What to avoid
Don't buy expensive tech at random: you may get the specs wrong. Avoid low-quality IT souvenirs, turn-it-off-and-on-again jokes and gifts implying they're always stuck at the computer. A neutral but nice option for a colleague is a gift under 500 UAH.
