A bouquet that glows softly in the dark makes a striking gift for a date, a wedding or New Year’s Eve. But real flowers don’t glow by themselves — the effect comes from special coatings or lighting. Recently, though, the first plant that gives off its own light has appeared. Here is how it all works and how to make a glowing bouquet.

You can delight someone today: flower baskets or flowers in a box.

Four ways to get glowing flowers.

Glow-in-the-dark spray or gel

The most common method. A clear coating with a phosphorescent pigment (usually strontium aluminate) is applied to the petals and leaves. In daylight or under a lamp the pigment “charges”, and in the dark it releases the stored light as a green or blue glow. The flowers are brightest in the first few minutes and then fade gradually; put the bouquet back under a light to recharge it.

UV paints

Fluorescent paints don’t glow in the dark on their own, but they shine in neon colours under a black light. They are ideal for parties, photo shoots and stage décor.

LED lights

The simplest option, and the kindest to the flowers, is to weave a battery-powered micro fairy light through the bouquet. The thin wire is almost invisible by day and turns the arrangement into a lamp in the evening.

The first glowing petunia

In 2024 the Firefly Petunia went on sale in the United States — a genetically engineered petunia that glows by itself. Scientists gave it genes from a bioluminescent fungus, so the plant converts caffeic acid, already present in its cells, into a light-emitting compound. The glow is soft and greenish, best seen in complete darkness and strongest in young flowers. For now it is grown mainly in the US.

Do any flowers glow in nature?

There are no truly luminous flowers in nature, although some fungi and other organisms glow. Many flowers do reflect ultraviolet light, however, showing patterns that bees can see and we cannot. And the white or pale flowers of night bloomers — moonflower, flowering tobacco, evening primrose — stand out in moonlight and seem to shine at dusk. Read more in night-blooming flowers.

There is also a historical puzzle: in the 18th century Carl Linnaeus’s daughter Elisabeth described “flashes” above nasturtium flowers at twilight. Later researchers put it down to our vision — bright orange against green foliage creates an illusion of flickering in low light.

How to make a glowing bouquet

  • Choose light-coloured flowers — white roses, chrysanthemums, gypsophila, lisianthus: the glow shows up better on them.
  • Spray a thin layer onto dry petals outdoors or in a ventilated room and let it dry.
  • Charge the bouquet under a bright lamp for 10–15 minutes before giving it.
  • If you’d rather not treat the flowers, use LED fairy lights — the effect is just as good.

Safety

Treated flowers are purely decorative: don’t use them with food or drinks, keep them away from children and pets, and put the faded bouquet in household waste rather than compost. The coating does not make flowers last longer, so care for the bouquet as usual: trim the stems and change the water.

FAQ

How long do treated flowers glow?

After charging, anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours, fading gradually. You can recharge them as often as you like.

Are there living flowers that glow on their own?

Yes — the genetically engineered Firefly Petunia — but no naturally self-luminous flowers exist.

What occasions suit a glowing bouquet?

Romantic dates, weddings, New Year and birthdays — any time a gift is given in the evening.
