Today you can send a bouquet to another city in a couple of minutes from your phone. Getting here took more than a century: from messengers carrying hothouse flowers to international florist networks and online shops. Here is how flower delivery began and what has changed since.
Order delivery in Kyiv: large rose bouquets and flower baskets.
People sent flowers long before delivery services existed: a servant or messenger carried the bouquet, and in winter only greenhouse owners could enjoy fresh blooms. Delivery was a private matter and worked only within one town.
The breakthrough came when florists started to cooperate. In 1908 the Fleurop association was founded in Germany, and in 1910 American florists created Florists’ Telegraph Delivery (FTD). The idea was simple: a customer orders from their local florist, who wires the order to a colleague in another city, and the flowers are delivered fresh without long shipping.
Over time the networks linked into international systems, making it possible to send flowers to almost any country, with shared catalogues, bouquet standards and settlements between florists.
