How to Keep Rose Petals Fresh and How to Dry Them

Rose petals are an easy way to make an evening romantic, a wedding ceremony festive and a bath special. But fresh petals are fussy: in warmth they darken and shrivel within hours. Here is which roses to choose for petals, how to keep them fresh until the moment you need them, how to dry them for potpourri and décor, and how to use petals safely at home and at weddings.

Which roses are best for petals

• Fresh flowers that have just started to open. On a fully open rose the petals have already lost their firmness and darken quickly.
• Full varieties. Hybrid tea and peony-style roses give 30–40 or more petals per flower, and these petals keep their shape longer.
• Colour. Red and burgundy petals darken more noticeably during storage and drying, while pink, cream and yellow ones look fresh for longer.
• For baths and cooking use only roses from your own garden grown without chemicals: cut roses from shops are almost always treated with pesticides.

How to keep petals fresh

1. Remove the petals gently and discard any damaged or spotted ones. Do not wash them: surface moisture speeds up spoilage.
2. Lightly dampen a paper towel; it should be moist, not wet.
3. Place the petals loosely in a plastic container or zip bag and cover with the damp towel.
4. Store in the fridge vegetable drawer (2–5 °C), away from fruit: ethylene speeds up wilting.

Stored this way, petals usually look good for 2–3 days, sometimes longer. If you need petals at a specific time, buy the roses 1–2 days ahead and pull the petals on the day. Do not freeze fresh petals: once thawed, they turn brown and slimy.

How to dry rose petals

Dried petals keep for months and are ideal for potpourri, sachets, cards, wedding confetti and keepsakes.

• Air drying. Spread the petals in a single layer on paper or a mesh in a dark, dry, ventilated place. After 5–7 days they will be crisp. The simplest method, though the colour darkens noticeably.
• Silica gel. Cover the petals with floral silica gel in a closed container for 2–5 days. This preserves colour and shape best.
• Oven. At 40–50 °C with the door ajar, petals dry in 1–2 hours. Watch that they do not scorch.
• Microwave. Between two paper towels, in short 20–30 second bursts, until the petals feel dry.
• Pressing. Between sheets of paper in a heavy book for 1–3 weeks, for herbaria, cards and frames.

Store dried petals in a lidded glass jar in the dark. For fragrant potpourri, add a few drops of rose or geranium essential oil.

• A romantic surprise. A petal path from the door, a heart on the bed, petals on the table. Do not scatter them near lit candles, and never leave candles unattended.
• Weddings. Guests shower the couple with petals after the ceremony. Check the venue's rules: some ban fresh petals because they stain carpets and are slippery; dried petals are a good alternative.
• Bath. Use only petals from roses grown without pesticides, and remove them right after bathing so they do not stain the tub.
• Kitchen and cosmetics. Toners, tea and jam from petals are covered in rose petal recipes.

How to make the roses themselves last longer

The fresher the roses, the lovelier the petals. Cut the stems at an angle by 2–3 cm with a sharp knife, remove leaves below the waterline, change the water every 1–2 days and add cut-flower food. Keep the vase away from radiators, direct sun and fruit bowls. If a bud droops, recut the stem and lay the whole rose in cool water for a couple of hours; this often restores its firmness.
