Fun facts about roses
- The genus has more than 100 species and tens of thousands of cultivars.
- There are no naturally blue or black roses: «blue» ones are dyed or genetically engineered and look more lilac.
- One of the oldest depictions of a rose is a fresco at the palace of Knossos on Crete, about 3,500 years old.
- The Thousand-Year Rose grows at Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany and survived even the 1945 bombing.
- It takes 3–4 tonnes of petals to make 1 kg of rose oil, one of the most expensive essential oils.
- Shakespeare mentions the rose more than 50 times in his works.
