The Kremenets Botanical Garden is one of Ukraine’s oldest and largest: founded in 1806 at the famous Kremenets Lyceum, it now covers 200 hectares on the slopes of the Kremenets Hills, with an elevation difference of about 150 metres. It holds over 2,000 plant taxa, a magnolia garden, a rose garden, an alpine garden and dozens of Red Book species. Here is its history, what to see and how to plan a visit.

History

The garden was founded in 1806 at the Volhynian Gymnasium, later the Kremenets Lyceum. Irish gardener Denis McClair laid it out, and from 1809 physician and botanist Willibald Besser directed it. By 1810–1811 it had grown to 20 hectares and over 2,300 species. When the lyceum closed in 1832 the collections went to Kyiv, forming the basis of Kyiv University’s botanical garden. The Kremenets garden was revived in 1990 and is now a landscape monument of national importance.

What to see

Of its 200 hectares, about 170 are forest on the Kremenets Hills and about 30 are collection and display plots: a magnolia garden, rose garden, alpine garden, conifer garden, arboretum, and ornamental, medicinal and fruit collections. Its special value lies in combining world collections with the native flora of the Kremenets Hills, including over 100 rare species, more than 50 of them in Ukraine’s Red Book.

Key spots: the quarry, Old Park and Mount Volovytsia

Besides the collections, a few spots are worth adding to your route:

  • The Old Park — the historic part with veteran trees dating back to the Kremenets Lyceum.
  • The old quarry — a former stone quarry being reclaimed by nature, an unusual landscape for a botanical garden.
  • The alpine hill and rock garden — mountain plants among the stones.
  • The parterre and display area — formal beds by the entrance.
  • The view from Mount Volovytsia — a panorama of the Kremenets Hills and town.
  • The “Throne of Nature” art object — a popular photo spot in the woods.

The garden is home to 165 animal species, and protected plants include lady’s slipper orchid, pasque flower and 11 species of the magnolia family.

When to go: what blooms by season

  • April: the magnolia garden is in bloom — there is even a themed tour, “Spring garden secrets: the magnolia kingdom”.
  • April–May: rare spring flowers on the wooded slopes, some of them shade-lovers, as described in shade-loving flowers.
  • June–August: the rose garden, rock garden and aromatic herb collection.
  • September: dahlias — with a separate autumn tour, “The world of dahlias”.
  • October: autumn colour in the woods on the Kremenets Hills.

Exact dates depend on the weather each year.

How to visit: address, tours and prices

  • Address: 5 Botanichna St, Kremenets (Ternopil region).
  • Format: the garden is a state nature conservation institution; visits are guided walks along an eco-trail, booked in advance by phone, email or Facebook.
  • Tour prices (garden price list): groups — 450 UAH for pupils, 600 UAH for students, 750 UAH for adults (up to 15 people); a private tour for up to 10 people — 500 UAH. Tours last 30–60 minutes.
  • Free: combat veterans and war veterans with ID.
  • Terrain: about 150 m of elevation change — a walk on the slopes feels like an easy hike, so wear good shoes.

Prices and conditions may change — check with the garden’s office. Other gardens in Ukraine are covered in botanical gardens of Ukraine.

What visitors value most

Ternopil-region travel reviews of the Kremenets garden most often mention:

  • Hills and forest — 170 hectares of natural forest on the Kremenets Hills
  • History — an 1806 garden whose collections founded the Kyiv University garden
  • The magnolia garden — the main spring event
  • Red Book plants — over 50 species
  • Themed tours — from a children’s treasure hunt to an aromatic herb walk

The most common tip is to combine the garden with Bona Castle Hill and old Kremenets and make a full day of it.

Eco-trails and hiking routes

Kremenets is not just collections but a real forest on the slopes. Three eco-trails total 14.5 km, and longer hikes start from the garden:

  • “To where Little Polissia meets the Kremenets Hills” — 6.5 km, about 5 hours.
  • “Kremenets — an ancient town embraced by hills” — 5 km, about 4.5 hours, linking the garden with the old town.
  • Themed tours — a children’s quest, an aromatic herb walk, the spring “magnolia kingdom” and the autumn “world of dahlias”.

The elevation change is about 150 metres, so pace yourself and bring water. The garden also offers camping spots — check conditions with the office.

How to get to Kremenets

  • Address: 5 Botanichna St, Kremenets, Ternopil region.
  • Distance: about 414 km from Kyiv and 161 km from Lviv — plan 1–2 days.
