Lavender as a gift: ideas, meaning and tips

Lavender makes a gift full of mood: it smells of summer and Provence, looks lovely fresh or dried, and a bouquet can later become a fragrant sachet. It is a great choice for someone who is no longer surprised by roses. Here are lavender gift ideas, who and when to give them to, and how to keep the scent for a long time.

Which lavender to give

• English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — the classic garden lavender with a soft, sweet scent; most often used in bouquets and cooking.
• Lavandin (L. × intermedia) — a large hybrid with long stems and a sharper, camphor-like scent; most lavender oil for perfumes and cosmetics comes from it.
• French lavender (L. stoechas) — with “rabbit ear” bracts on top of the flower heads; striking in a pot but not hardy in a Ukrainian garden.

Gift ideas

A fresh bouquet. The best season is June–July, when lavender blooms in Ukraine. A single-variety lavender bouquet looks stylish and simple, while with roses, peonies, lisianthus or daisies it makes a soft Provence-style arrangement. Fresh lavender lasts 7–10 days in a vase and can then simply be left to dry.

A dried bouquet. Dried lavender keeps its colour and scent for 1–2 years, so it can be given at any time of year.

Sachets. Linen bags of dried flowers go in wardrobes and linen drawers, freshening clothes and, by old tradition, deterring moths.

Potted lavender. A good present for a gardener: keep English lavender on the sunniest balcony in summer, then plant it out. Indoors all year round it struggles — it needs sun and a cool winter.

Edible gifts. Lavender honey, sugar, tea or biscuits. Use only untreated culinary lavender and never add essential oil to food.

Home fragrance. A candle, diffuser or natural soap with lavender. Essential oil must not be swallowed or applied neat to the skin; be careful with it if you have cats.

• A housewarming — potted lavender or a dried bouquet for a new home.

What lavender symbolises

How to preserve lavender

1. Cut the stems when about half the buds have opened — that is when the scent is strongest.
2. Tie small bunches with a rubber band, as stems shrink while drying.
3. Hang them upside down in a dark, dry, airy place for 1–2 weeks.
4. Store dried lavender away from sunlight; rub the flower heads gently to revive the scent.
