Lollipops are perfect for sweet bouquets: the stick is a ready-made stem and the round top is the centre of the flower.
Chupa Chups has a fun history, too. The Spanish confectioner Enric Bernat created it in 1958, originally under the name Gol. The new name comes from the Spanish chupar, "to suck", and the famous daisy logo was designed by Salvador Dalí in 1969.
What you need
- Lollipops: 11–25 for a small bouquet, all the same flavour and colour or mixed.
- Crepe paper in 2–3 colours for petals and green for leaves.
- Florist wire or wooden skewers and green floral tape.
- A glue gun or double-sided tape and scissors.
- Wrapping: film, kraft paper or felt and satin ribbon.
Step-by-step tutorial
- Petals. Cut 10–12 cm circles or teardrop petals from crepe paper. Stretch the middle of each petal with your fingers to cup it.
- Bud. Stack 2–3 circles, pierce the centre and slide them onto the lollipop stick, or wrap petals around the lollipop like a tulip. Secure at the base with a dot of glue or thread.
- Stem. If the stick is hollow, push wire inside; if it is paper, lay a wire or skewer alongside. Wrap the stem and the neck of the bud with green floral tape and add crepe paper leaves.
- Assembly. Arrange the flowers in a spiral, starting from the centre and angling each new one slightly. Bind the stems with tape or an elastic band at the binding point.
- Wrapping. Wrap the bouquet in film, kraft paper or felt, trim the stems to one length and tie a ribbon bow.
Variation: a sweet basket
Fill a basket or box with floral foam or polystyrene wrapped in green paper and push the finished lollipop flowers into it. Fill the gaps with paper leaves, small sweets or a soft toy. You can make the same kind of arrangement from any wrapped sweets.
Safety
- Do not give sweet bouquets to children under 3–4: lollipops are a choking hazard.
- Tuck wire ends inside the stem and cover them with tape.
- Only put glue on wrappers and paper, never on the sweets themselves.
FAQ
How many lollipops do I need for a bouquet?
11–15 for a small bouquet and 25 or more for a lavish one. An odd number is traditional for gift bouquets.
Can I combine lollipops with fresh flowers?
Yes: add spray roses, chrysanthemums or gypsophila, placing fresh flowers in water tubes or wet floral foam.
