Mykola (Nicholas) is one of Ukraine’s best-loved names. It comes from the Greek Nikolaos, “victory of the people”. Under the new church calendar, Mykola’s name day falls on 6 December and 9 May. A gift for Mykola

Mykola’s winter name day falls on St Nicholas Day, so small symbolic gifts work well: something tasty, a warm scarf, a book or a gift for a hobby. Choose a restrained arrangement for a man — roses in a box, a flowers-and-sweets composition, or roses with chocolate, which suit the December holiday especially well.
