Peony roses are roses with a very full, rounded bloom that resembles a peony: dozens of petals, a cupped or rosette shape and a noticeable scent. Brides, florists and gardeners choose them for an old-fashioned look. Here is where these roses come from, which varieties you most often see in bouquets and gardens in Ukraine, what they cost and how to make them last longer in the vase. If you grow real peonies in your garden, read when to transplant peonies. Which other roses smell strongest? See fragrant roses.

What peony roses are

  • “Peony rose” is not a botanical species but a flower shape: very double (from 40 to over 100 petals), rounded, with petals that pack the centre tightly. As it opens, the rose starts to look like a peony, hence the name. In shops they are also called garden roses, English roses or peony-style roses.
  • The trend began with English breeder David Austin: in 1961 he introduced Constance Spry by crossing old roses with modern ones. His collection has since grown to hundreds of varieties, and Japanese, French and German nurseries followed with similar roses. Read the full story in David Austin English roses.

How they differ from ordinary roses

  • Shape. A classic hybrid tea has a tall, goblet-shaped bud, while a peony rose has a flat or globular bud that opens into a cup full of petals.
  • Scent. Most peony varieties smell much stronger than long-stemmed imported roses, from tea and fruit notes to myrrh.
  • Stem and vase life. Stems are usually shorter (40–60 cm), heads heavier, and the flower lasts a little less in the vase — around 5–7 days versus 7–10 for classic roses. In return, it opens beautifully.
  • It is easy to tell a peony rose from a real peony: the rose has thorns and pinnate leaves and is available all year (as a cut flower) or blooms in several flushes over summer (in the garden). Peonies have a short season, from late May to June. Learn more in our peony guide.

Varieties for bouquets

  • Juliet is an apricot-peach David Austin rose and one of the best-known wedding roses. Keira and Miranda are soft pink, and Patience is creamy white with a light scent.
  • Pink O’Hara and White O’Hara have large cupped blooms with a very strong scent and are often grown in Kenya and Ecuador. Red Piano is a deep red peony rose for those who want classic red in a garden shape.
  • Spray peony roses: Misty Bubbles (pink), Lady Bombastic and Madame Bombastic carry 5–10 small round buds on one stem, so even a small bouquet looks lush. More in spray rose bouquets.

Garden varieties for Ukraine

  • Gardeners most often choose Austin roses: Abraham Darby (apricot), Graham Thomas (yellow), Gertrude Jekyll (pink with a very strong scent), Lady of Shalott (orange and among the hardiest) and Munstead Wood (deep crimson).
  • For arches and fences, try the climber Pierre de Ronsard (Eden Rose) with creamy-pink globular blooms. The nostalgic varieties from German nurseries Kordes and Tantau also overwinter well in most of Ukraine.
  • A list of shrub varieties with descriptions is in the best spray rose varieties for the garden.

How to choose a peony rose bouquet

  • Quantity. The blooms are big and full, so even 9–15 roses make a proper bouquet. For a wedding or anniversary, choose 25–51; a 101-rose mono bouquet would be very heavy.
  • Colour. Powder pink, peach and cream are the most popular, as they emphasise the old-fashioned shape. See what each colour means in rose colour meanings.
  • Freshness. Choose blooms that are about a third open: a tight bud may never open, and a fully open rose drops sooner. Slightly bruised outer guard petals are normal; the florist removes them before arranging.
  • Price. In our catalogue a single peony rose costs roughly 145–220 UAH, an 11-stem bouquet from 2,240 UAH and a 51-stem one from 8,000 UAH. Spray peony roses work out cheaper because one stem carries several flowers.

Care in the vase

  • Trim the stems at an angle by 2–3 cm with a sharp knife and strip leaves that would sit in water. Fill the vase halfway with cool water and add cut-flower food.
  • The heads are heavy, so use a stable, wide-based vase and do not overcrowd it. Change the water every day or two and recut the stems each time.
  • Keep the bouquet away from sun, radiators and fruit bowls: ethylene from ripe fruit speeds up wilting. More tips in how to make a rose bouquet last.

How to grow peony roses in the garden

  • Site and planting. They need at least 6 hours of sun a day and shelter from wind. Plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September to mid-October), with the graft union 5–7 cm below the soil.
  • Watering and feeding. Water less often but deeply, 10–15 litres per bush once a week in hot weather. Give nitrogen in spring and potassium-phosphorus from June; stop nitrogen after mid-July so shoots can ripen.
  • Pruning and winter. In spring, shorten shoots by about a third and remove weak or frost-damaged ones. Earth up and cover the bush once frosts of −5…−7 °C set in. Heavy blooms may droop after rain, so taller varieties need support.

Why are they called peony roses?

Because of the bloom: it is very double and rounded with dozens of petals, so once open it looks like a peony.

How long do peony roses last in a vase?

Around 5–7 days if you change the water and recut the stems daily.

Are peony roses and English roses the same thing?

Almost: most peony roses are David Austin English varieties, but Japanese, French and German breeders also produce similar roses.

When should I plant peony roses?

In spring (April–May) or in autumn from September to mid-October.
