The apostle Peter was a fisherman whom Christ called among his first disciples and named the “rock” of the Church. Paul first persecuted Christians but after his conversion became the “apostle to the nations” and wrote many of the New Testament epistles. Both died as martyrs in Rome. In Ukraine, the feast of Peter and Paul ends the Apostles’ Fast and is linked with many folk customs.
The apostles’ names have interesting meanings. Petro comes from the Greek “petros”, “stone”: Christ called the apostle the rock on which He would build the Church. Pavlo comes from the Latin paulus, “small” or “humble”, a name the apostle took in place of his former name, Saul. So the wishes can come in pairs:
