The name day of Vira, Nadiia, Liubov and Sofiia (Faith, Hope, Love and Sophia) under the new church calendar of the OCU and UGCC is celebrated on 17 September; under the old style it is 30 September. The day honours the holy martyrs Faith, Hope and Love and their mother Sophia. It is one of the most beloved women’s holidays in Ukraine: the celebrants are greeted twice over — for their name day and with wishes of faith, hope and love. Below are short wishes, wishes in your own words, messages for a friend, mom, daughter or colleague, and poems. Wishes for other holidays of the year are in our holiday wishes calendar.
Happy name day! May faith, hope and love always be part of your life.
Vira, happy name day! May faith in yourself lead you to your dreams.
Nadiia, happy angel day! May every hope come true.
Liuba, happy name day! May love keep you warm every day.

Wishes in your own words
The saints’ names suggest the wishes themselves: faith in herself for Vira, fulfilled hopes for Nadiia, warmth and mutual love for Liubov, wisdom for Sofiia. Add a personal detail. For example: “Nadiia, happy name day! You can lift people up even when it seems there is no hope. May your own dreams come true and may you always be surrounded by people who believe in you.”

About the feast
According to tradition, Saint Sophia and her three daughters lived in Rome in the 2nd century. The girls died as martyrs for their faith, and their mother buried them and soon died at their grave. The saints’ names became symbols of the three main Christian virtues and of wisdom.
Flowers for the celebrants
A women’s holiday is a great reason to give tender roses or a lush bouquet — for a mom, a daughter or a colleague.
These names are the Slavic translation of three Christian virtues: faith, hope and love. Their mother is Sofiia, “wisdom”. So the greeting can give each name-day girl a wish of her own virtue:
For Vira: “May your faith in yourself and in goodness never waver.”
For Nadiia: “May every hope come true, and new ones appear every day.”
For Liubov: “May the love you give return to you a hundredfold.”
For all three: “May faith, hope and love always walk side by side — like sisters.”
