Red is the brightest and most emotional colour in a bouquet. It catches the eye and speaks of love, passion and joy, and in some traditions of remembrance. Here are the main red flowers, what they mean and how to put together a stylish red bouquet.
In floristry red is most often linked with love. But the meaning also depends on the flower: a red tulip is traditionally a declaration of feelings, a carnation a sign of respect, and since 2014 the red poppy has been the symbol of Ukraine’s Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation on 8 May. For rose colours in detail, see “Rose colour meanings”.
Popular red flowers for bouquets
Roses are the classic declaration of love, from velvety dark red to bright scarlet.
In the garden, salvias, pelargoniums, cannas, dahlias, roses, poppies and bee balm provide red accents. Red pairs well with silver foliage and green grasses; in a small garden use it sparingly, as it makes a bed look closer.
A small bunch of red tulips, spray roses or gerberas: bright but not too formal.
Which red flowers last longest?
Carnations, anthuriums and chrysanthemums, which can last two weeks or more with good care.
