Many of the orchids sold in European florists began their journey in Taiwan. The island is one of the world’s largest producers of Phalaenopsis, and in spring and summer its mountains are covered with calla lilies, cherry blossom and daylilies. Here is where to see flowers in Taiwan.
Orchids in Tainan. The annual Taiwan International Orchid Show is held at a large orchid plantation near Tainan, displaying thousands of Phalaenopsis varieties from miniature to giant.
Yangmingshan calla lilies. In the national park near Taipei, the Zhuzihu area fills with white calla lilies in spring, and visitors can cut their own.
Alishan cherry blossom. In spring this mountain resort with its forest railway is one of the most popular places to view cherry blossom.
Hualien daylilies. In late summer the mountainsides of eastern Taiwan turn bright orange with flowering daylilies.
Moth orchids do well indoors too, given a bright window out of direct sun and moderate watering. For more flower travel in Asia, see Thailand in flower, and for plantations elsewhere, flower parks and plantations.
