History of Podillia garden

Podillia Botanical Garden was laid out in 1963 on about 70 hectares on both banks of the Vyshnia River, near Vyshenske Lake and the Pyrohov estate museum. Trees were planted over decades, and today the garden is estimated to hold over 400,000 trees and shrubs. In 1977 it was declared a monument of landscape art, and it later became a teaching and research base of Vinnytsia National Agrarian University.

Today 51.1 hectares are protected. One part adjoins the university; the other, the arboretum, borders Druzhby Narodiv Park. The garden has eight departments, including the arboretum, a forest-typology plot, fruit and berry crops, ornamental plants and the winter garden; a young apple orchard was planted in 2005.

What to see: arboretum, woodland plots and winter garden

  • The arboretum and about 20 themed woodland plots — hornbeam, plane, oak, chestnut, birch and several pines; over 450 species grow outdoors.
  • The forest-typology plot — models of different forest types, of interest to students and forest lovers.
  • The 360 m² winter garden — over 1,300 plants, including hundreds of tropical species.
  • The fruit and berry department and a young apple orchard.
  • Flower beds — dahlias, cannas, begonias, salvias and zinnias in summer; for ideas for your own bed, see garden flowers.

The garden sits by scenic Vyshenske Lake, so a walk combines easily with the shore. Worth knowing: local media note that parts of the grounds, especially the arboretum, are less well kept than the central plots, and rare plants have few information signs.

When to go: what blooms at Podillia garden by season

  • April–May: flowering trees and shrubs in the arboretum, fresh green in the woodland plots.
  • June–August: the brightest beds — dahlias, cannas, begonias, salvias and zinnias.
  • September–October: golden and crimson hornbeams, oaks, plane trees and chestnuts in the themed plots.
  • All year: the 360 m² winter garden with exotic plants.

Exact bloom dates depend on the weather each year.

A walking route: garden, lake and Pyrohov estate

Podillia garden spreads across both banks of the Vyshnia, so a 2–3 hour loop works best:

  • start in the central part by the university — the best-kept alleys, flower beds and the winter garden;
  • walk through the arboretum’s themed woodland plots: plane trees, hornbeams and pines;
  • go down to Vyshenske Lake and along the shore — the best views for photos;
  • the Mykola Pyrohov estate museum is next door, easy to add if you are making a day of it;
  • finish in the arboretum by Druzhby Narodiv Park — quiet and almost empty.

Wear good shoes: woodland paths are unpaved and muddy after rain. In spring bring tick repellent — there is a lot of grass and scrub.

What visitors value most

Vinnytsia guides and city media most often mention:

  • Woodland plots — about 20 themed “forests” of hornbeam, plane, oak and pine
  • Vyshenske Lake nearby — easy to continue your walk along the shore
  • Space — 51 hectares of green within the city
  • The winter garden — exotic plants in any season
  • Summer beds — bright annuals from June to autumn

The main tip is to check visiting conditions in advance, since the garden is a university teaching and research base.
