Zamioculcas, the ZZ plant or “dollar tree”, suits people who forget to water: glossy leaves, a calm nature and the ability to go weeks without water. Yet too much care is what usually kills it. Here’s how to care for a ZZ plant at home, how often to water and feed it, how to repot it, why leaves turn yellow and how it flowers. More plants with names and tips in our houseplant catalogue.
Overwatering is far more dangerous for a ZZ plant than drought
What a ZZ plant is
[фото: сорти заміокулькаса поруч — зелений, Zenzi, чорний Raven, строкатий]
The ZZ plant comes from East Africa, where it grows on rocky soils and survives long droughts, storing water in a tuber-like rhizome and thick stalks.
What looks like a stem with leaflets is actually one large compound leaf.
Popular varieties: the classic green, compact Zenzi, near-black Raven and a variegated form.
The “dollar tree” name comes from the belief that it attracts money and prosperity.
ZZ plant care at home
Light: indirect, from bright to partial shade. Harsh midday sun can scorch it; in deep shade it stretches and grows slowly.
Watering: only when the soil is completely dry, roughly every 2–3 weeks in summer and monthly or less in winter.
Temperature: +18…+26 °C, not below +12…+15 °C in winter. Misting isn’t needed; just wipe dust off the leaves.
Feeding: monthly from April to September with half-strength succulent or cactus fertiliser; none in winter.
How to repot a ZZ plant
[фото: кореневище-бульби заміокулькаса під час пересадки]
Repot in spring: young plants yearly, mature ones every 2–4 years when the rhizomes distort or crack the pot.
Choose a slightly larger, heavy, stable pot, as mature plants tend to tip over.
Use cactus and succulent mix with perlite and drainage; transfer the root ball whole without burying the tubers deeper.
The sap irritates skin, so wear gloves.
Repotting and dividing an old ZZ plant
A large old ZZ plant often splits its plastic pot, in which case it is easier to cut the pot away than pull the plant out. Do not shake off all the soil: gently divide the rhizomes by hand or with a clean knife into 2–3 pieces, each with tubers and a few leaves. Let the cuts dry for 2–3 hours, dust with charcoal, pot into slightly dry succulent mix and do not water for 5–7 days. After division it may produce no new shoots for a few months while it builds roots.

Why a ZZ plant turns yellow
[фото: пожовкле листя заміокулькаса від переливу]
Overwatering is the commonest cause: lower leaves yellow and stems soften. Check the roots and tubers, cut away rot, dust with charcoal and repot in dry soil.
Natural ageing: if one old leaf yellows while new ones grow, there’s no need to worry.
Cold and draughts, especially after watering in winter.
Sunburn: yellow-brown patches on leaves in direct sun.
How a ZZ plant flowers
[фото: квітка заміокулькаса — кремовий качан біля основи]
ZZ plants flower rarely and only when mature: a short cream spadix in a greenish spathe appears at the base, like a peace lily flower but hidden among the leaves.
Flowering doesn’t affect the plant’s health and is more likely with bright indirect light and correct watering.
Propagating a ZZ plant
Dividing the plant when repotting is the quickest way.
From a single leaflet: let the cut dry for a day, set it in damp sand or mix; a tuber forms over a few months, and the first leaf may take six months or more.
Is the ZZ plant toxic?
Like other aroids, it contains calcium oxalate; the sap irritates skin and mucous membranes, so keep it away from cats, dogs and small children.
Yes. Beliefs about the "dollar tree" and opposite superstitions are just folklore. The one real caveat: the sap irritates skin and mucous membranes, and chewing the leaves can irritate the mouth and upset the stomach in cats, dogs and toddlers. Keep it out of their reach and wear gloves when repotting.
A plant instead of a bouquet
Want to give something living and long-lasting? A potted orchid blooms for months and decorates a home longer than a bouquet.
Only when the soil is completely dry: every 2–3 weeks in summer, monthly in winter.
Why is my ZZ plant turning yellow?
Usually overwatering; also cold, sunburn or natural ageing.
Does the ZZ plant flower?
Yes, but rarely and only when mature; the flower is a cream spadix at the base.
What should I feed a ZZ plant?
Succulent or cactus fertiliser monthly from April to September.
