Iława, a town on Poland's longest lake
Iława's story begins in 1305, when Sieghard von Schwarzburg, the Teutonic commander of Dzierzgoń, founded a town on a peninsula of Lake Jeziorak, on the site of an Old Prussian settlement; its charter was renewed in 1317. In 1454 residents backed the Prussian Confederation, and in 1520 the town swore allegiance to King Sigismund the Old. The 1706 fire spared only the Church of the Transfiguration and a few houses. A waterway to Elbląg and Ostróda opened in 1860 and a railway to Malbork and Gdańsk in 1876. Iława became part of Poland in 1945, and its Polish name was confirmed on 19 May 1946.
People linked to Iława
Anatomist Richard Altmann (1852–1900), discoverer of mitochondria, and General Hellmuth Stieff (1901–1944), a member of the plot against Hitler, were born here. Karol Wojtyła twice kayaked the Jeziorak with young people, commemorated by the Papal Calvary of the Iława Lake District. For Ukrainians, the town is home to the Greek Catholic parish of St. John the Apostle, whose church, a converted gasworks, was consecrated in 1998 by Archbishop Ivan Martyniak on a street named after Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky.
Iława today
The town lies on the 27.45 km Jeziorak and includes Duża Żuława, Poland's largest inland island, reached by ferry; the Elbląg Canal links it to the Baltic. Sights include the Gothic Church of the Transfiguration (1317–1325) with its 1550 Renaissance tower, remains of 15th-century walls, the 1905 Iława Główna station and Baroque statues of Jupiter, Juno, Medusa and Hercules in the park. Every year it hosts Złota Tarka, Europe's oldest traditional jazz festival. We will hand your flowers to the recipient at any address in Iława.
