Autumn flowers are much more than chrysanthemums and asters. From September to the first frosts dozens of garden plants bloom, and florists turn them into the warmest bouquets of the year. This guide covers the names and photos of autumn flowers, perennials and annuals for borders, shrubs, bulbs, potted plants and cut flowers, plus their symbolism. It draws on Google data about what people search for in autumn and on the observations of UFL’s florists.

Perennial autumn flowers

Perennials are the backbone of an autumn border: plant them once and they flower every year just as the summer blooms fade.

Garden chrysanthemums

The stars of autumn. Small-flowered “Korean” chrysanthemums tolerate light frosts and bloom into November, in shades from white and yellow to burgundy and lilac.

Perennial asters (Michaelmas daisies)

New York and New England asters form clouds of small lilac, pink and white flowers — in Ukraine they are nicknamed “veresenky” after September, their blooming month.

Rudbeckia and echinacea

Sunny daisy-like flowers with dark centres: rudbeckia in yellow-orange, echinacea in pink or white. Easy-going, drought-tolerant and sun-loving.

Sedum (showy stonecrop)

Fleshy leaves and dense pink flower heads that deepen to brick red, attracting butterflies and bees into October.

Japanese anemone

Delicate white and pink flowers on tall stems — one of the most elegant autumn plants for partial shade.

Helenium

Warm-toned flowers in yellow, orange and terracotta with domed centres; a great match for rudbeckia and ornamental grasses.

Annuals that flower until frost

Annuals are sown in spring but look their best in September, once the heat breaks.

  • Marigolds — orange and yellow with a distinctive spicy scent; among the best-known Ukrainian autumn flowers.
  • China asters — the flower of 1 September in Ukraine, in forms from peony-like to quilled.
  • Zinnias — bright pompoms in every colour that last well when cut.
  • Cosmos — airy pink and white flowers on feathery stems.
  • Dahlias — technically perennial, but in Ukraine the tubers are lifted every autumn; they flower until the first frosts.
  • Ornamental cabbage — not a flower, but its pink and purple leafy “roses” brighten beds even in November.

Autumn bulbs and shrubs

Colchicum (autumn crocus) and true autumn crocuses pop up on bare ground in September–October as lilac goblets. They are often confused, but colchicum is poisonous while the saffron crocus is not, so plant them away from play areas.

Panicle hydrangea holds its large heads into October as they turn from white to pink and wine red. Heather covers the ground in pink, lilac and white until the frosts. Repeat-flowering roses give a second flush in September, while guelder rose and rowan add red berries to the garden.

The most beautiful autumn flowers: photos and notes

If you choose just a few plants to make autumn sing, UFL florists recommend these:

  1. Dahlia ‘Café au Lait’ — huge cream-peach blooms up to 25 cm across, a wedding florist favourite.
  2. Chrysanthemum ‘Anastasia’ — spidery petals in dozens of shades from lime to burgundy.
  3. Peony-flowered aster — lush double blooms like miniature peonies.
  4. Panicle hydrangea ‘Vanille Fraise’ — heads that turn from white to strawberry pink.
  5. Japanese anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ — snow-white flowers with golden stamens.
  6. Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ — “autumn joy” in German: pink heads that deepen to burgundy.
  7. Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ — golden daisies that bloom into October.
  8. Double colchicum — lilac “water lilies” right on the lawn.

Autumn flowers for bouquets

In autumn, florists work with the warmest palette of the year: terracotta, mustard, burgundy and peach. Autumn bouquets are built on chrysanthemums (spray and single-stem), asters, dahlias, hydrangeas and warm-toned roses, with seasonal accents: berried stems (hypericum, rosehip, rowan), grasses, dried flowers, eucalyptus and even mini pumpkins in box arrangements.

How to plan an autumn border

  1. Layer by height. Tall Michaelmas daisies, helenium and dahlias at the back; rudbeckia, echinacea and sedum in the middle; low chrysanthemums, marigolds and heather at the front.
  2. Relay flowering. Combine plants that start in August (rudbeckia, echinacea), September (asters, sedum) and October (chrysanthemums) so the border stays bright into November.
  3. Warm and cool tones. Yellow and orange flowers pop against lilac asters, while grasses and foliage tie the picture together.
  4. Sun. Most autumn flowers love sun; for partial shade choose Japanese anemones and hydrangeas.

Autumn flowers in pots

No garden? Bring autumn to a balcony or porch. The best pot plants are multiflora chrysanthemums (domes covered in blooms), heather, ornamental cabbage, cyclamen on cool balconies and gaultheria with red berries. Combine them in one trough with ivy; it lasts until the frosts, and the chrysanthemums can be planted out afterwards.

Autumn flower care and winter preparation

  • Deadhead faded flowers so asters, zinnias and roses keep blooming.
  • Dahlias are lifted after the first frost blackens the foliage; dry the tubers and store them in a cool cellar at +3…+7 °C.
  • Perennials such as rudbeckia, echinacea and sedum can be left uncut until spring — the dry stems decorate the winter garden and shelter beneficial insects.
  • Chrysanthemums are mulched with peat or leaves; tender varieties are lifted and overwintered somewhere cool.
  • Roses are earthed up and covered once temperatures stay below zero, not earlier, so the plants don’t rot.

Ukrainian autumn flowers and their meanings

  • Marigolds (“chornobryvtsi”) — a symbol of home and of remembering one’s parents, traditionally planted by village houses.
  • Asters — loyalty and a gentle farewell to summer; the flowers of 1 September.
  • Chrysanthemums — longevity, joy and friendship; nobility in East Asia.
  • Dahlias — generosity and gratitude.
  • Guelder rose (kalyna berries) — one of Ukraine’s key symbols, a protective charm and sign of ancestral memory.

Autumn flowers for kids: names and riddles

For preschool and primary classes, six autumn flowers are easy to remember: aster, chrysanthemum, dahlia, marigold, hydrangea and heather. A few simple riddles:

  • “My petals look like little stars, I come in every colour, and on 1 September I go to school in a bouquet” — aster.
  • “Yellow and orange, I don’t smell like a rose, and I grow by village houses” — marigold.
  • “Late autumn, cold outside, yet I bloom as a bush” — chrysanthemum.

For drawing and crafts, asters and marigolds are easiest thanks to their clear shapes and bright colours.

Autumn flowers for birthdays

For September, October and November birthdays, give what’s in season: the flowers are fresher, brighter and last longer. For a woman, choose roses and chrysanthemums in powder and peach tones or an arrangement with hydrangea; for a man, a more restrained bouquet of burgundy chrysanthemums, grasses and berried stems. For a colleague or teacher, classic asters or spray chrysanthemums last two to three weeks in a vase. Add a card with a warm autumn message: “May this year be as generous and bright as a September garden.”
