How to choose a wish for someone close

  • Start with who the birthday person is to you. We say “thank you” to Mum, “remember when?” to a friend and “wishing you success” to a colleague. That is why this collection is grouped by recipient: family, children, partners, godparents, friends and colleagues.
  • Add the name and an affectionate form — it instantly makes the text personal. Ready-made options for 69 names are in our wishes by name collection.
  • If it is a milestone — 18, 30, 50 or 60 — take the age into account. Texts for each age are in our wishes by age section.
  • A short wish plus one personal memory works best. Universal texts and tips on writing your own are in our main article — birthday wishes in your own words.

Parents and grandparents

  • Older relatives value gratitude and attention more than fancy words. Remember what they taught you and say thank you — such a message stays with them for a long time.
  • For the dearest person — birthday wishes for Mum: touching texts from a daughter or son, short card wishes and verses.
  • Dad appreciates sincere, restrained words with a touch of humour — birthday wishes for Dad has options from a daughter, son and the whole family.
  • Grandma wants to feel that her grandchildren remember her care. Our wishes for Grandma collection has texts from grandchildren, touching and short ones.
  • For Grandpa — wishes for Grandpa: wishes of health, wisdom and many years with the family.
  • A special case is when you congratulate the parents rather than the child. Suitable words are in wishes to parents on their son’s birthday.

Children and grandchildren

  • A wish for a child should be simple, cheerful and full of dreams. For grown-up children, show more pride and support and fewer lessons.
  • For a son — birthday wishes for a son: from Mum and Dad, for a little boy or a grown man, short and in verse.
  • For a daughter — birthday wishes for a daughter: tender words from Mum and Dad, touching texts and wishes for a grown-up daughter.
  • Grandparents will find wishes for grandchildren useful — warm texts for grandchildren of any age.
  • Especially for a granddaughter — wishes for a granddaughter with wishes of beauty, joy and dreams come true.
  • For the little birthday girl — wishes for a little girl: fairy-tale, cheerful and short texts.
  • For a little boy — wishes for a little boy: wishes of adventures, courage and favourite toys.
  • Teenagers dislike lectures — wishes for a teenager offers only light, modern texts.
  • A baby’s first year is a celebration mostly for the parents. Words for them and the little one are in first birthday wishes.

Siblings and other relatives

Partners: wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend

  • Write to your partner from the heart: about shared moments, plans and what you value in them. A short message in the morning and a longer one with flowers in the evening.
  • For a wife — birthday wishes for a wife: romantic, touching and short words from her husband.
  • For a husband or fiancé — wishes for a beloved man with tender and playful options.
  • For a girlfriend — birthday wishes for a girlfriend: from a boyfriend, from friends and simply beautiful texts.
  • For a boyfriend — wishes for a boyfriend: short, funny and without too much drama.

Godparents and godchildren

In-laws

  • Wishing in-laws a happy birthday is delicate: be respectful but not formal. Thank them for raising your partner and wish them good health.
  • For a mother-in-law — wishes for a mother-in-law: respectful texts from a son- or daughter-in-law, thanking her for the family warmth.
  • For a father-in-law — wishes for a father-in-law: restrained, respectful and with a dash of humour.
  • From parents to a son- or daughter-in-law — wishes for a son- or daughter-in-law: wishes of harmony and happiness for the young family.
  • For your child’s parents-in-law — wishes for co-in-laws: friendly words that strengthen ties between the families.

Friends, neighbours and acquaintances

  • We greet friends most sincerely — with memories, inside jokes and plans for new adventures. For acquaintances and neighbours, a few warm sentences without getting too personal are enough.
  • For a female friend — birthday wishes for a friend: touching, funny and in your own words. One of the most popular articles here.
  • For a male friend — wishes for a male friend: short, manly, funny and sincere.
  • For an acquaintance — wishes for an acquaintance: polite, universal texts that do not sound dry.
  • For classmates — wishes for a classmate: with memories of school years.
  • For neighbours — wishes for a neighbour: friendly and short.

Colleagues, bosses and teachers

  • At work, restrained wishes for success, inspiration and a good team are appropriate. On behalf of a team, write “we” and add a shared bouquet or gift.
  • For a colleague — birthday wishes for a colleague: for women and men, formal and informal.
  • For a boss — wishes for a boss: respectful, from the team and without flattery.
  • For a teacher — wishes for a teacher: from pupils, parents and graduates.
  • For defenders — wishes for a soldier: with gratitude, wishes of strength and a safe return home.

Universal: for a woman or a man

  • When you do not know the birthday person well or are writing on behalf of a group, universal texts work best.
  • For any woman — birthday wishes for a woman: a colleague, sister, kuma or partner.
  • For any man — birthday wishes for a man: a colleague, brother, kum or partner.

By style: short, in verse, funny

A wish formula for anyone

  • If no ready-made text fits, write your own using a simple four-step formula. It works for Mum and a colleague alike — only the tone changes.
  • 1. Address: an affectionate name or role — “Mummy”, “Dear kuma”, “Dear Ms Olena”. 2. Personal: one detail only the two of you share — a memory, a joint project or a character trait.
  • 3. Wishes: two or three specific ones rather than ten general ones. Instead of “happiness, health, success”, try “I hope you finally get to the seaside” or “may the new project bring you joy”. 4. A warm ending: “Hugs”, “So proud of you”, “Come and visit”.
  • For older relatives add gratitude, for children more play and imagination, for colleagues less personal detail and more wishes about work. For partners honesty works best: simply say what this person means to you.

What to add to your wishes: ideas by recipient

  • For Mum, Grandma or a mother-in-law — a lush bouquet of roses or hydrangeas or flowers in a box: they last long and bring joy every day.
  • For Dad, Grandpa, a kum or a boss — a restrained bouquet in dark tones, a fruit basket or a potted orchid. Men receive flowers too, just skip the extra bows.
  • For children and teenagers — a bright bouquet, a balloon or a sweet set. For a partner — classic red roses, for a friend or sister — trendy pastel arrangements, for a colleague — a mono-bouquet from the whole team.

Universal verses for anyone

Happy birthday, here’s to you,
May your dearest dreams come true,
May your days be warm and bright
And your heart be full of light!

May this day bring smiles and warmth your way,
May light fill your heart every day,
May family and friends be near,
And happiness stay all year!

Flowers to go with your wishes

Even the best message sounds more convincing with a bouquet. Tender roses or hydrangeas suit Mum and Grandma, red roses suit a partner, a restrained mono-bouquet suits a colleague, and a basket of fruit or sweets suits a friend. You can add a card with your wish to the order.
