Age suggests which words to choose: we say different things to a baby turning one and a grandmother turning eighty. This page collects all our age-based birthday wish articles, from the first birthday to the 90th. For each date we briefly explain what makes it special and give an example of a short wish; the dedicated article has texts for different recipients, verses and gift ideas.

How to tailor a wish to age

  • For children under five, short rhymes and simple words work best, and the parents are the main audience.
  • Teenagers aged 13 to 17 want to be treated as adults: less baby talk, more respect for their hobbies and plans.
  • For people aged 18 to 35, wish bold decisions, career success, travel and love.
  • Milestones from 40 onwards are celebrated formally: words of gratitude and wishes for health and family warmth fit well. General texts are in birthday wishes.

Children’s birthdays: 1, 5 and 10

  • First birthday — A first birthday is mostly a celebration for the parents: the baby does not understand words yet but feels the joy around. Wishes go to both the child and Mum and Dad. Example: «Happy first birthday, little one! Grow up healthy and happy to the joy of Mum and Dad.» More wishes in first birthday wishes. Gift ideas: an educational toy and a bouquet for Mum.
  • 5 years — Five is a child’s first jubilee. The little one waits for the party like a miracle, so wishes should be simple, bright and easy to understand. Example: «You are five! Grow up cheerful, brave and kind.» More wishes in 5th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a building set, a picture book, balloons.
  • 10 years — Ten is the first round number. The child already has hobbies and friends, so mention their successes and dreams. Example: «Happy first round birthday! May your dreams come true and friends always be near.» More wishes in 10th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a craft or sports kit, a first “grown-up” bouquet.

Teenage birthdays: 13 to 17

  • 13 years — Thirteen is the official start of the teenage years: a personal style, new interests and the wish to be taken seriously. Sincere words with light humour work best. Example: «Welcome to your teens! May they be bright and fun.» More wishes in 13th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: headphones, cinema tickets, a spring bouquet.
  • 14 years — Fourteen is the age of the first passport in Ukraine. Teenagers feel almost grown-up, so keep the wish warm but not childish. Example: «Your first passport is your first step into adult life! May it be a confident one.» More wishes in 14th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a passport cover, a book, a tender bouquet.
  • 15 years — Fifteen is a time of self-discovery: new friends, hobbies and first serious decisions. Teenagers appreciate being treated as grown-ups. Example: «Happy 15th! Dream boldly — you will make it.» More wishes in 15th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a stylish accessory, tulips or hydrangeas.
  • 16 years — Sixteen is the “sweet” age of first dates and big plans. Wishes are often romantic and inspiring. Example: «Sweet sixteen! May this year bring your best memories.» More wishes in 16th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: jewellery, an experience voucher, roses.
  • 17 years — Seventeen is the year of graduation, choosing a career and the last year before adulthood. Wish courage in choosing a path. Example: «Happy 17th! Choose your path boldly — the best is ahead.» More wishes in 17th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a gadget, concert tickets, a rose and lisianthus mix.

Coming of age and youth: 18, 20, 25

  • 18 years — Coming of age is one of the most important milestones: new rights, new responsibility and freedom. Wishes combine solemnity and joy. Example: «Happy 18th! May adult life be happy and full of opportunities.» More wishes in 18th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a keepsake and a large festive bouquet.
  • 20 years — Twenty is the first adult jubilee: studies or a first job, independence and big dreams. Example: «Happy 20th! May your twenties start with big victories.» More wishes in 20th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a trip, a voucher, a modern bouquet.
  • 25 years — A quarter of a century: first achievements behind you and countless opportunities ahead. Example: «Happy quarter-century! May every year ahead be even better.» More wishes in 25th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: an experience, gadgets, roses in a box.

Milestones from 30 to 45

  • 30 years — Thirty is a time of confidence: you know what you want and have the strength to get it. Wishes for harmony and success fit well. Example: «Happy 30th! May this be your happiest age yet.» More wishes in 30th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a hobby gift, 31 roses.
  • 35 years — Thirty-five is mature youth: experience, family, career and still energy for new things. Example: «Happy 35th! Wisdom, energy and new achievements.» More wishes in 35th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a getaway, a nice accessory, hydrangeas.
  • 40 years — Forty is a special date some celebrate quietly. Make wishes warm and confident: life is just beginning. Example: «Happy 40th! May the best years still be ahead.» More wishes in 40th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: an experience for two, a luxurious bouquet.
  • 45 years — Forty-five is celebrated with humour and warmth. Wishes for health and joy fit well. Example: «Happy 45th! May every day bring joy and new experiences.» More wishes in 45th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a spa voucher, a lush rose bouquet.

  • 50 years — Fifty is a major jubilee — half a century of experience. Wishes are solemn and grateful. Example: «Happy 50th! Health, happiness and new heights.» More wishes in 50th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a keepsake, 51 roses or a flower basket.
  • 55 years — Fifty-five is a jubilee of maturity and wisdom, often marking a new stage of life. Example: «Happy 55th! May the new stage be joyful and calm.» More wishes in 55th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a trip, a flower basket.

Respected jubilees: 65 to 90

  • 65 years — Sixty-five is a time to live more for yourself. Wish vigour and favourite pastimes. Example: «Happy 65th! Vigour, joy and favourite pastimes.» More wishes in 65th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: things for favourite pastimes, hydrangeas.
  • 70 years — Seventy is a jubilee of wisdom. Wishes are heartfelt, grateful and wish many happy years. Example: «Happy 70th! Many years, health and peace.» More wishes in 70th birthday wishes. Gift ideas: a warm blanket, a bouquet from the whole family.

Age-based wishes for different recipients

  • Parents congratulate a child of any age with love and pride: “We are proud of you” fits at 5 and at 50. See wishes for a son and wishes for a daughter.
  • For colleagues on a milestone, restrained wishes for success and health fit best — see wishes for a colleague.
  • You can joke about age with friends, but only if they enjoy that humour. For grandparents, simple words of gratitude are best.

What to avoid in age-based wishes

  • Do not mention “getting old” or compare with younger people — even as a joke, it can hurt.
  • Do not pressure teenagers with “time to grow up” advice — support their dreams instead.
  • Do not use the same template for everyone: add a name, a memory or a detail that means something to this person. For name ideas, see birthday wishes by name.

How to sign a card for a bouquet

  • Keep it short: one or two sentences with the name and age read better than a long poem.
  • Add who the bouquet is from so the birthday person knows right away who thought of them.
  • For milestones, a formal note fits: “Happy 60th birthday! With love, your family.”

Verses for every age

For a child: Candles on your cake shine bright,
Everyone cheers for you tonight!
Grow up healthy, kind and strong,
Happy all your whole life long!

For a teenager: May your dreams be bold and bright,
Your friends be loyal, true and kind;
May every day give you new wings
And strength to reach the goals you find!

For a milestone: Let the years fly by — no fear,
As long as spring stays in your heart,
As long as loved ones gather near
And every day’s a happy start!

Flowers and gifts for every age

For children under ten, balloons, soft toys and small bright bouquets work best. Teenagers love stylish modern arrangements or tulips. For milestones from forty, lush bouquets of roses, hydrangeas or flower baskets look festive and last long.

Do people celebrate a 40th birthday?

Some celebrate 40 quietly out of superstition, but that is only a tradition. If the person celebrates, wishes should be warm and confident.
